Utilizing social, local and family history, In Mordialloc Before The Stawell Gift explores many aspects of ordinary people’s lives in Australia in the 1915-1960 period: WWI, The Great Depression, WWII, Communism, Protestant-Catholic friction and the social role of the pub. Touching and sometimes comic, the play highlights working class Australians in the aftermath of the Great Depression and World Wars: their struggles, resilience and survival mechanisms. These difficulties play alongside the hope that their children will have a better and more prosperous future as Australia heads towards a new multiculturalism
